Decks, Patios, Porches & Balconies... What is the Difference?

Porches, balconies, decks, patios, and verandas are all outdoor living spaces, but they have different characteristics:

​Porch
An open-air extension of the home's living area, usually built in front of the entrance and at the same level as the interior. Porches can be covered with tile or roofs, and can be raised or enclosed with screens. They are often made of wood, and can be more expensive and difficult to build than patios because of their more complex designs.

Balcony
A small, elevated platform that's attached to a room in the house, usually requiring railings. Balconies are often not on the ground floor, and can be a good alternative to a backyard.

Deck
An elevated platform that's usually raised off the ground and attached to the side or back of the house. Decks can be multi-level and are often made of composite wood or a blend of wood fibers and plastic.

Patio
A ground-level living space that can be covered or uncovered, and can be attached or detached from the building. Patios are typically constructed with pavers, brick, stone, or concrete.

Veranda
A large, open-air space that wraps around the house at ground level, similar to a deck but usually larger and more expansive. Verandas are often unraised and unscreened, but may have railings, and are popular in warmer climates and Victorian homes. They can be a good place for outdoor living, such as hosting barbecues or dinner parties.
